|On Valentine’s day in 2013, the CBC developed a tribute show to Dinah Washington, a live concert documentary style 1 hour special that starred Jaclyn Guillou. It was a 50th anniversary to commemorate Dinah’s death and was recorded for film and television. It aired numerous times on the TV series "Absolutely Canadian" and "Absolutely Vancouver" as well as the CBC Radio One program "Hot Air" with Margaret Gallagher.
The project has evolved into a more personal reverence for Dinah Washington, one of the worlds best singers of the 1950s and 1960s, who was Jaclyn’s first jazz influence. Dinah Washington lived an incredible, yet fairly short, musical career crossing over various genres of music that included gospel, jazz, blues, country and popular hits.
Since the CBC performance, Jaclyn has continued to evolve the project paying homage to Miss D and released an album of songs that Dinah Washington recorded. Her 2016 album, This Bitter Earth, is Jaclyn Guillou’s own reverence to the music bringing her own diverse inspirations to the music. Songs include What a Difference A Day Made, I’ll Close My Eyes, All Of Me & Cry Me A River.
Bitter Earth keeps the tradition and spirit of the torch singer alive and highlights Dinah’s diva mix of repertoire with new arrangements inspired by Peter Gabriel (New Blood album), Herbie Hancock (River:The Joni Letters), and Diane Reeves (Beautiful Life) Grammy winning album.
The CD features emotionally rich vocal jazz using tradtional elements and a new modern take on classic tunes. Featuring stunning string quartet arrangements by Cameron Wilson, accompanied by Canadian jazz A–listers Tilden Webb, Jodi Proznick, Jesse Cahill, Campbell Ryga and Jon Bentley.
