"Book these guys!! This great sounding duo had everyone up to dance at our wedding. Their ability to play a variety of instruments, and a variety of music styles, meant they could play almost any request that we had. They took the time to craft a personalized playlist, and helped us modify our First Dance song so that the lyrics were meaningful to my husband and I. I would recommend these talented musicians without hesitation." –Jenny Finnegan, Wedding Client
Rhythm and Cello
Blend of Guitar & Cello tied together with Flawless Harmonies
Band members John Welsh and Stephanie Glegg meld their musical and songwriting talents with vocal harmonies for an eclectic sound that appeals to a broad demographic.
With an extensive set list of original and cover tunes (ranging from the Beatles and Bob Marley, to the Gipsy Kings and Ray LaMontagne), their sound is as versatile as the venues in which they perform.
Rhythm and Cello formed in 2006, when John and Stephanie branched from the high–energy 6–piece Latin/reggae band Los Amigos to provide ceremony music for an outdoor wedding on Hernandez Island. They personalized their eclectic sound for the couple by taking musical requests – a practice they continue today as a means of building their extensive repertoire.
Stephanie and John enjoy playing a broad range of musical genres, including folk, rock, pop, Latin and reggae. Their unique arrangements of familiar cover tunes, and acoustic–style originals suit a wide range of venues and events, while appealing to a broad demographic. In addition to playing at cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars, the duo can be found at community events, concert series, art showcases, festivals, conferences and weddings.
Rhythm and Cello repertoire includes songs by The Beatles, CCR, Bob Marley, Gypsy Kings, Simon and Garfunkel and more. See their Songlist under promo for the entire selection.
John got his start as a performance artist in the college house party scene, playing songs for everyone to sing along. Over the past 10 years he has performed his diverse styles of music for audiences around BC and the Lower Mainland. John draws influences from artists, such as Ben Harper, Sublime, Sam Roberts and Joel Plaskett. His songs are often inspired by his travel experiences and blend elements of folk, surf rock, reggae and Latin genres. John has recorded and performed solo and in collaboration with various artists including the Welsh Brothers, Los Amigos and Rhythm & Cello. He has shared the stage with such artists as Tom Freund, Current Swell, Daniel Wesley and T. Nile.
Classically trained beginning at age five, Stephanie performed as a soloist and in ensembles and orchestras before adding contemporary genres and improvisation to her repertoire. She has contributed cello arrangements and recordings to three original studio albums and one live album. Musical highlights outside of Rhythm and Cello include performing at the Malkin Bowl with Brazilian/jazz/funk/folk fusion group Gravity Fetish, touring Canada with Celtic rock band Shoofly, being featured at New Music West with folk rock band The Welsh Brothers, grooving at weddings and festivals with Latin/reggae band Los Amigos, and accompanying dancers Afifa Eidher & Melanie Meyers at the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival.
She also had the opporunity to accompany actor Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) in his live show "The Concert I Never Gave... except for, like, 2000 times in my bedroom." Stephanie played Cello and sung backup vocals alongside Loren Gold (keyboardist for The Who), Tyler Stewart (drums, Barenaked Ladies), Murray Foster (bassist, Great Big Sea), and local guitarist Paul Kinman.
Stephanie is also available as a solo cellist for corporate events. read more…
